10 Ways to Find Peace in This Crazy World

Last month in our Not Alone series, I wrote about some big life transitions I went through and the feelings of loneliness that crept up when I found myself in a new city with a new job and away from all my friends and family.

Change can be scary and intimidating, but it can also be opportunity for growth and reliance on God. Even though I was feeling lonely in the beginning of my transition, I had faith that I was where I was supposed to be. Everything happens for a reason, and God has given me peace about where I am in my life and that is the greatest feeling of all.

In the middle of chaos, stressful situations, and uncertainty, it isn’t exactly easy to find peace- but it’s doable. I believe that when there is a will, there is a way, and with God all things are possible. Which leads me to the grand topic of this article- Finding Peace. How in the world are we supposed to find peace in a world that seems to be the exact opposite of that? In a culture that supports thoughtlessness and chaos? As mentioned above, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

I brainstormed a few ways that might lead you to finding peace wherever you currently are in your life.

1- Realize and reflect on who made you. If God is capable of stitching us together in the womb, he is more than capable of providing us peace and carrying our burdens.

2-Learn to love the process of who you are becoming and not only focusing on the end result. Getting to where you want to be doesn’t happen over night and if we set that expectation in the beginning striving for a goal it can help us not become frustrated and overwhelmed.

3- Pray- never underestimate the power of prayer.

4- Forgive those who have hurt you. Holding bitterness and resentment in your heart against those who have wronged you only holds you back. Jesus says to “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15

5- Stop glorifying the “busy” lifestyle. I have noticed a trend in today’s culture with putting the idea of being “busy” up on a pedestal. It is essential to take time to be still and focus on the things that are important to you and recharge your batteries. Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”

6- Simplify your life- get rid of things that are bogging you down and may be a distraction to your progress. Sometimes less really is more.

7- Surround yourself with encouraging people, and encourage others as well.

8- Take the time to exercise and work it out. There is scientific proof that consistent exercise leads to increased physical and mental health.

9- Listen to positive, uplifting, and calming music. Music is one of the major influences in my life to providing peace. I love turning on my All Sons and Daughters Pandora station to start my day on a positive note or wind down with it at the end of the day.

10- Don’t take yourself and life too seriously. We only get one chance at this life- laugh and be joyous! “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” James 4:14

Of course, there are more ways than this to find peace, and I could keep brainstorming a list for forever, but I hope these 10 ideas meet you where you are in your journey to finding peace. It is a conscious decision everyday to have a peaceful attitude! =)
